Tap Beer Syndrome

Image
It was a hot n humid September afternoon in Mumbai, I was chilling out with my favorite gang - Amit & Chetal. From GST to politics to cricket to Netflix, I was loving the way we were changing the discussion topics like Mumbai weather. Engrossed in a serious discussion about how India is moving, finally Amit remembered that we are supposed to feed ourselves. On asking my choice - I expressed my desire to have a tap beer. Isnt that too precise and why Tap beer. So, my subconscious mind remembered that it was a dry day. Both laughed as this wasn’t the first time I was asking for something that was unavailable. With a giggle Chetal diagnosed me to be suffering from Tap beer syndrome – basically chasing something what I cant get. That made me think, whether  I feel very needy or maybe greedy in those moments. I am weird and I like that awkwardness. But I am not alone.  "Too often, the thing you want most is the one thing you can't have," heard Meredith...

Earn good, invest better!

Image
Today, Indian woman earns well, spends well but why doesn’t she invest well? Why the canniest female generation our country has ever witnessed, is dawdling behind in a sphere where there is complete freedom. She relishes her financial independence by siphoning money from her own account to shop, travel, socialize but when it comes to financial investment, she depends on the male member of the family or sticks obdurately to the traditional instruments- FDs, PPFs & Saving accounts in the era of bedrock interest rates. When asked about the next choice of investment, they trust, brick & mortar despite the quantum of outflow, risk level, loan interests and cost of maintaining that asset. It is baffling why well-educated women lack confidence and interest in investing in equities. Is it emotional attachment to the hard earned money, which makes them risk averse or the stigma of uncertainty & complication associated with the equity market that causes repulsion. For age...

Life in Business Suit

Image
Ironed to perfection white shirt, cushion soled formal shoes, dry cleaned Business Suit and there we are- in our perfect corporate look. We spend most of our alert time in that attire preparing presentations, excels, business cases and as rightly said working towards fulfilling somebody else’s dream. Being away from the family is normal as our profile demands travelling and you can’t say NO to that schedule as it is critical for your professional growth and bank account health. A major difference which our generation has compared to the previous one is that we are hungry for more. Our aspirations are high and so are the stress level. Re quoting what I read once, we work 16 hours a day to pay the EMI of the house where we stay for 8 hours. Wait, stop for a while- the extra meeting would not add to our memonictonary (don’t google the word, you wont find it there. I use this word for the photo album which is saved in our minds as pictorial memory). It is essential to get ou...

Global economic recession: A blessing for Indian medical tourism

Much before the credit crisis rocked the American economy and the world, Michigan-based Jill Howard (name changed) made up her mind to visit India during the Christmas holidays this year for a joint replacement surgery . The 58-year-old engineer had planned her surgery in India, because she knew that the costs for the treatment would be much lower here compared to the US.
